Basing on the theoretical approach of G. Simmel: ‘Philosphie of Landscape’, ‘Bridge and Door’, ‘The Frame’ the course aims at relating concrete spatial interventions to the social, economical and political needs and situations.
This year the given theoretical tools initiate diverse mental experiences related to the concrete situation of RheinRuhr region. The German region is characterised by a massive land use through dismantling pit-coal for about 150 years. Today numerous spaces of dismantling and production, mainly steel production, are abandoned or already reused. One important set of interventions reusing the industrial waste land, the ‘International Building Exhibition Emscher Park 99’, will be introduced, discussed and will be the field to test the effects of the mental experiences given by the introduced theoretical approach.
